Another Step on the Road Down

How Many More Radio Stations Will Go the Way of the West?

Coit Tower, San Fransisco

I grew up with one particular news talk station in the San Francisco Bay area and that was KGO radio 810 AM. You could listen to it at night in the deep mountains of the Sierra Nevada’s. You could listen to it in Oregon or Washington. In fact, you could listen to it across nine western states and it had information that was relevant for all types of people and persuasions.

But now, it’s the first sports gambling/betting advice radio station in the San Francisco Bay area! Isn’t it great to have a first that puts us last in information? There’s no doubt that sports betting is an enticing and fun pastime for some people but it’s also an area of great addiction and problems for many. It’s hard to see a great form of communication go away only to be replaced by gambling. It’s not like California has any other unimportant moral concerns… Now they can add deeper gambling abuse to that mix.

Yeah, sure, I grew up listening to Ron Owens and Dr. Lautenberg giving opinions and receiving amazing advice that, at times, helped save my life from plain ignorance.

I remember listening to Bernie Ward and other liberal hosts who, thankfully, are now behind bars because of their peculiar habits, which were found to be illegal. But when I was there, there were many great talk shows! I remember hearing Roger Fredinburg for the first time on the lead-in show to Art Bell’s A.M. Coast to Coast!

Sure, everybody has their back-in-the-day stories, but when you take away information and replace it with addiction, it is certainly not a good thing! It’s been about four or five months since the change. Has that change improved or enhanced the San Francisco Bay Area? What do you think?
